In the digital world, picture quality depends on bit rates. For example, DVDs can deliver 8 Megabits per second (Mbps). HDTV broadcasts can reach 10 Mbps. However, Blu-ray Disc outshines them all with up to 48 Mbps! If that's not enough, Blu-ray Disc also provides full 1080p resolution to increase your viewing enjoyment. Quite simply, Blu-ray Disc is the best home video source ever.
With up to 7.1 channels of high definition surround sound and option for up to 32 streams of audio, Blu-ray Disc is an amazing experience for your ears. Blu-ray Disc will deliver concert videos and music videos from major artists and labels.
Blu-ray Disc offers the highest capacity on the market without compromising quality. Our blue laser technology enables up to 50 GB of storage - or five times the capacity of today's DVDs!
With integrated games, stunning high definition bonus features and a Blu-ray Disc player equipped with BD Live for Internet connectivity, you've got the best of both live and packaged content. Imagine enhancing your movie with live updates or live events built around your Blu-ray Disc content. If you just want to sit back and enjoy the movie, Blu-ray Disc allows for easy navigation through the film with convenient pop-up menus.
Blu-ray Disc has broader industry support at launch than any disc format ever introduced. It enjoys the enthusiastic support of major companies in electronics, computers, videogames, recording media, music and movies. Six of Hollywood's leading studios, accounting for the vast majority of 2005's home video sales, are among the 170+ companies that support Blu-ray Disc. So when you buy a Blu-ray Disc, you'll be in good company.
And what about your existing library of DVDs and CDs?. The Blu-ray Disc system uses the standard 12 cm and 8cm disc sizes to support backward compatibility with your existing CDs and DVDs. That means you don't have to throw away your current collections and start from scratch-they can still be enjoyed on a wide range of Blu-ray Disc playback products, including players, game consoles and Blu-ray Disc drives!
From movies to music to games to computer software and file storage, Blu-ray Disc provides you with one platform you can use throughout your home. The system offers a full spectrum of choices ranging from pre-recorded titles (BD-ROM), discs that you can record yourself (BD-R) and discs you can re-record over and over again (BD-RE), with proven writing and authoring tools from the leaders in PC-authoring software. So you will be able to use Blu-ray Disc technology in Blu-ray Disc players for your living room, Blu-ray Disc recorders, Blu-ray Disc-based game consoles, and Blu-ray Disc drives for your personal computer!
When the CD was introduced in the early '80s, it meant an enormous leap from traditional media. Not only did it offer a significant improvement in audio quality, its primary application, but its 650 MB storage capacity also meant a giant leap in data storage and retrieval. For the first time, there was a universal standard for pre-recorded, recordable and rewritable media, offering the best quality and features consumers could wish for themselves, at very low costs.
Although the CD was a very useful medium for the recording and distribution of audio and some modest data applications, demand for a new medium offering higher storage capacities rose in the '90s. These demands lead to the evolution of the DVD specification and a 5-10 x increase in capacity. This enabled high quality, standard definition video distribution and recording. Furthermore, the increased capacity accommodated more demanding data applications. At the same time, the DVD spec used the same form factor as the CD, allowing for seamless migration to the next generation format and offering full backwards compatibility.
Now, in the next millennium, high definition video demands a new solution. History proved that a significant 5-10 x increase in storage capacity and the ability to play previous generation formats are key elements for a new format to succeed. This new format has arrived with the advent of Blu-ray Disc, the only format that offers a considerable increase in storage capacity with its 25 to 50 GB data capacity. This allows for the next big application of optical media: the distribution and recording of high definition video in the highest possible quality. In fact, no other proposed format can offer the data capacity of Blu-ray Disc, and no other format will allow for the same high video quality and interactive features to create the ultimate user experience. As with DVD, the Blu-ray Disc format is based on the same, bare disc physical form factor, allowing for compatibility with CD and DVD.
