Englishkaran movie is all about Thamizharasu (Sathyaraj) who sounds a reformist, enters a village. He runs behind Sandhya (Madhumitha) who is a college student in the village. Siva (Siva Balaji), her college mate also loves her. Sandhya's father (Kadhal Thandapani) who is an influential man in the village, is a man of old ideologies.

Sandhya develops an affair with Siva. There is a reason for Sandhya hating Thamizharasu. Siva and Sandhya elope one night.

Eventually a shocked Sandhya comes to know that it was all possible thanks to the help of Thamizharasu. When she chides Siva and says Thamizharasu was responsible for her sister Maheswari (Namitha)'s death, Siva narrates a flashback.

Thamizharasu is the husband of Maheswari, whose desire is to excel in athletics and win a medal for the nation. Thamizharasu decides to encourage her. He helps her train well and encourages and motivates her to achieve her goal.

However, Thamizharasu's mother (Sathyapriya) works out a plan to ensure that Maheswari doesn't take to athletics anymore. Eventually, a dejected Maheswari commits suicide getting a promise from Thamizharasu to help her sister to become a popular singer. The rest is all but Thamizharasu's efforts in ensuring that he fulfills the promise.

Jayadevi attempts to bring out the subordination of women in a modern society dominated by men.
Aatma (Hariharan) is a fusion singer of international repute. He is also a painter-sculptor. He has written a book "Marana Sasanam". This book creates a stir among the various religions and the court decrees that the writer be kept under house arrest till a committee set up to study the contents of the book decides. Aatma then tells a group of students who visits him about the life of Jothy (Kushboo), the village girl who married Shyam (Riaz Khan), settled in Canada and after many a suffering, was killed by her husband.
Jothy, who was married when she was ten, became a widow even before she completed school. She took to classical singing and when Shyam, a wealthy NRI married her and took her to Canada, she was in heavenly bliss. She meets Aatma, the popular fusion singer who mixes classical eastern music with rock. Seeing her singing talents, the composer brings her into his troupe. All her dreams are shattered when she finds out that her husband is engaged in selling fake passports and in other underworld activities. She tells him to turn over a new leaf or not to have any physical link with her. This infuriates Shyam who harasses her mentally and physically. He also alleges that she is having an extra marital affair with Aatma. When she hears that her husband is going to blow up the tower in Canada, she decides to tell the police but she is killed by Shyam. Aatma reveals the various instances in the holy books of various religions which gives woman only a secondary status and makes her a slave to men. The court does not ban the book.

The story revolves around Maya (Sonia Agarwal), a college student, who always wants to triumphs in all her endeavors. She comes across a middle class youth, Cheenu (Srikanth), a happy-go-lucky-youngster, who strives to work hard to get his sisters married well.A few encounters (Maya and Cheenu) results in wordy duels between them leading to Maya challenging Cheenu that she will make him fall in love with her.
