Aatma (Hariharan) is a fusion singer of international repute. He is also a painter-sculptor. He has written a book "Marana Sasanam". This book creates a stir among the various religions and the court decrees that the writer be kept under house arrest till a committee set up to study the contents of the book decides. Aatma then tells a group of students who visits him about the life of Jothy (Kushboo), the village girl who married Shyam (Riaz Khan), settled in Canada and after many a suffering, was killed by her husband.
Jothy, who was married when she was ten, became a widow even before she completed school. She took to classical singing and when Shyam, a wealthy NRI married her and took her to Canada, she was in heavenly bliss. She meets Aatma, the popular fusion singer who mixes classical eastern music with rock. Seeing her singing talents, the composer brings her into his troupe. All her dreams are shattered when she finds out that her husband is engaged in selling fake passports and in other underworld activities. She tells him to turn over a new leaf or not to have any physical link with her. This infuriates Shyam who harasses her mentally and physically. He also alleges that she is having an extra marital affair with Aatma. When she hears that her husband is going to blow up the tower in Canada, she decides to tell the police but she is killed by Shyam. Aatma reveals the various instances in the holy books of various religions which gives woman only a secondary status and makes her a slave to men. The court does not ban the book.

Santhana Krishan (Madhavan), also known as Sakhi works in an automobile company and lives in a joint family. He comes across a model named Priya and the two fall in love with each other. Eventually they get married. Here begins the story. Unlike that of Sakhi's family, Priya's family is 'cosmopolitan' and too outgoing. Her mother(Aishwarya), is a party going socialite, while her father(Pratap K. Pothen) restricts himself to his house and doesn't bother to have a social life of his own.
Priya always goes out partying and doesn't spend much time with her family. Brought up in such a situation, Priya finds it hard to adjust to the family of Sakhi because his family doesn't like all this going out and partying stuff. They prefer to stay home and mix with family. Sakhi tries to make his wife understand the realities of life and the importance of family but is unsuccessful.
After their honeymoon Priya gets pregnant. Sakhi is on top of the world but Priya has doubts as she feels shes too young to be a mother. She tells her mother, who insists shes too young and under guise of a shopping trip takes Priya to the hospital for an abortion. Sakhi finds out in time and rushes to the hospital where a reluctant Priya is being pulled towards the abortion room by her mother. When he calls to her she turns but is hit by a stretcher in her abdomen, leading to a miscarriage. The story moves ahead with Priya finding her diary in Sakhis suitcase (he had stolen it at the beginning of the movie in order to woo her) accusing him of tricking her she leaves to her parents house.
At the same time she wants a divorce but she is pregnant again and Sakhi wants the child. The judge presiding rules that Priya will have to have the baby. Sakhi moves into Priya's parents house with her in order to take care of his unborn child, claiming he doesn't trust them not to try for another abortion.
Months pass and Priya has the baby. As it needs to be fed mothers' milk, Priya moves back in with Sakhis family for a period of six months. These six months find Priya getting closer to her baby then the day before the last day regretting her decision but convinced that Sakhi hates her, decides to go through with it. The next day her parents come to get her, her mother has already selected another husband for her.Sakhi acts unbothered and taking the baby tells her to leave. halfway home Priya jumps out of the car; her dad and her finally stand up to her mother. she stands lost on the island in the middle of the road when Sakhi drives by, then returns with a smile to pick her up.

Parthiban (Srikanth) is a recent college grad, still young and undeterred by the pressures of the real world to hold down any one job for a long period of time. He falls in love with a girl (Sneha) he sees on the bus when loitering about with his friends. He finds that her tastes matches his perfectly. His parents, fed up with his ways, force him into an arranged marriage. Parthiban is surprised to learn that the girl he has been set up with is the same one he fell in love with. Unfortunately, he realizes that Sathya (Sneha), the girl he has married is a different woman, and that he actually loves her free-spirited, long-lost twin, Janani (Sneha again).He begins to hate his wife, who is demure and quiet. He avoids her, and rebukes her kind actions and words. After some miscommunication, and a clever trick, he reveals that he has fallen in love with his wife.
