Well known Mridangist Umayalpuram K Sivaraman was honoured with Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian honour in the country.
His new techniques, innovations and creative ability in accompaniment, solo renditions, and jugalbandhi programmes with his North Indian counterparts have earned him a special place in the world of art, worthy of emulation by other artists.
He is the first mrindangam master to win the honour and he is immensely happy for received this honour. According to sources, this 75 year old vidwan has been performing for 65 years. He has accompanied carnatic masters such as Semmankudi Srinivasa Iyer, M. Balamurali Krishna, Madurai mani and many others.
In a recent interview, he said “I Dedicate this award to my parents, gurus and mahavidwans who I have played with.
